Texas Holdem History
Texas Holdem is the most popular poker variant of the most popular card game. There is no clear evidence about where this game originated, but what we know for sure is that it was first played in Texas, in the early 1900s. Most people agree upon the fact that Texas Holdem derived from more card games that were played back then.
Some say that poker was played in China in 900 AD, which was before the playing cards were invented. Texas Holdem used to be played with dominoes, but the rules were pretty much the same.
From the etymological point of view, the name of the game was believed to have come from the French term, poque, the famous game with which poker definitely had a lot in common. This is where betting and bluffing developed from. In addition to that, poque was the first card game played with a card deck with hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds and it was a very popular game in France throughout the 15th century.
Some say that the deck of cards as we know it today originated in India, where a single deck contained over 90 nicely painted cards and they were used for a variety of games. This is how the famous As Nas game developed in Persia. Texas Holdem poker took al lot form this game: the rounds of betting, the dealing, the ranking of the cards and hands all have their origins in this Persian game. However, it is believed that earlier games had a larger impact on poker, since As Nas was only invented in the 17th century.
Until the late 19th century, the game spread all through the country as the means of transportation and communication were developing. Shortly after, the 52 card deck was introduced and the game suffered many other changes during the Civil War. We may say that between 1861 and 1865, Texas Holdem owed a lot of its improvement to the American military, as this is how the game and its rules were passed on.
Texas Holdem has been played since the 1970s and it has been the most preferred poker variant. Its roots go so deep back in time that it is not know for sure where the game came from. Still legend has it that it was first played in 1925 in Texas. With the opening of the World Series of Poker in 1970 in Las Vegas and then with the annually celebrated event, the popularity of poker increased tremendously. Tournaments began to be organised more often and then, with the development of the Internet industry, the poker fans could enjoy their favourite game from all over the world. And they still do and have a lot of success at it.
