Omaha Poker Strategies

Omaha Hi-Lo poker or Omaha 8 or better is a very popular game in both live and online rooms and its profitability is extremely high. However, many people don’t make maximum advantage of it because they play it randomly, as they perceive it as an easy game to play. It is true that it’s a fast moving game, but if you don’t base your play on a strategy than it’s really not worth playing it.

Like in all the poker games, the cards you are first dealt are highly relevant for the final outcome of the game. With these cards you have to figure out all the possibilities of making a high hand and a low one. We’re talking about possibilities because you can use the aces in forming either hand. And it can help you win both parts of the pot. Each game ends with a high hand winner, but not necessarily with a low one as well. If your hand consists of an A 2 3 4 5, you qualify for both the low hand and the high one and you have high chances of winning in both cases.

Flushes usually win most times, but if you have a ten high flush, for instance be aware that it may be beaten if one of your opponents has a jack high or better. When you’re after the entire pot, you should play aggressively because your aim is to acquire as much money into the pot as possible. So, you shouldn’t make your opponents call two bets cold. Still, if they are already in for a bet, your aim is to keep them into the game and pay another bet on each consequent round of betting until you have the winning hand. This is the best way in which you can maximize your profit by keeping your opponents in the game and having them put their money into the pot.

Omaha poker, unlike Texas Hold’em is a game of maths. Here, reading your own hand and calculating the best ways of making it profitable is a lot more important than reading your opponents’ hands.

In Omaha poker you get four up cards instead of two, as in Texas Hold’em. But it is wrong to think that this gives you double the starting hand combinations, because four cards there are six two card combinations you can make. Therefore, in a 10 handed game there are 6 combinations available for you and 54 for your opponents. This is why you need to carefully operate a selection of your cards. While double suited hands with aces are excellent for a nut flush, 3 or 4 cards of the same suit have no chances of winning. Big pairs don’t win as often as you might think, or as often as they do in Texas Hold’em, so it’s not the best choice to rise in such cases. In Omaha poker flushes, straights and full houses will bring you winnings! And the wisest thing you need to do is only for the entire pot when you’re sure about it, when you’re only certain about a half, limit yourself to that because being greedy never works to a gambler’s advantage. And maybe next time your hand will qualify for both parts of the pot.
